Best Practices

Each year, Beta Alpha Psi sponsors regional and national "Best Practices" competitions. For seven years, Deloitte has provided funding for both the regional and annual Best Practice Awards with $500, $250, and $125 awarded for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place finishers in each category at the regional meetings and $1,000 for 1st, 2nd and 3rd place finishers in each category at the annual meeting. |

BAP/AICPA Medal of Inspiration |
This year, Beta Alpha Psi and the AICPA are once again jointly sponsoring a program whereby such inspirational stories can be shared, thereby encouraging others to reach within and find the “greatness” in themselves. Up to three winners will be selected by a panel of Beta Alpha Psi Board and/or Advisory Forum members and a representative of the AICPA. These students will receive the “Medal of Inspiration” award at the Beta Alpha Psi 2009 annual meeting and a cash scholarship award of $5,000, made possible by the generous funding of the AICPA. |

Institute of Management Accountants |
Scholarships
IMA sponsors a variety of scholarship programs to help students offset the high cost of education. These include the IMA Memorial Education Fund and Stuart Cameron and Margaret McLeod Memorial Scholarships. In addition, IMA’s Foundation for Applied Research offers a research grant program for doctoral students who are pursuing research in the area of management accounting. IMA National Student Case Competition
Teams of students respond to a published case by preparing and submitting a videotaped presentation to judges selected from IMA members. The 2009 finals competition will be held at IMA's Annual Conference and Exposition in Denver, Colorado on June 6-10, 2009. This very exciting competition presents students with real life challenges and the opportunity to:
- analyze a case
- develop a solution
- present it to an audience
- receive recognition for their efforts
The case study is published in the September 2008 issue of Strategic Finance.

AccountingWEB Accounting Student Scholorship Program |
- Participation in the AccountingWEB Accounting Student Scholarship program is open to United States citizens attending colleges, universities, and professional schools of accounting in the United States. Students applying for the AccountingWEB Accounting Student Scholarship must have already completed at least one semester or two trimesters of full-time college and must be declared accounting majors, effective for the fall of 2009.
- The scholarship is a $500 award, payable to students who attend college as full-time students, have a cumulative grade point average of 2.5 on a 4.0 scale, or the equivalent, and who are declared accounting majors. Transcripts will be required as evidence of this status.
- Scholarship winners will be chosen based on submission and subsequent judging of a short essay not to exceed 500 words. The topic for the 2009 AccountingWEB Accounting Student Scholarship is Green Accounting Firms. Essays will be judged on both style and content. More details are available in the Scholarship Rules.
- Applications are now being accepted and will be accepted through the deadline of midnight EST March 31, 2009. Winners will be selected by May 1, 2009 and notified shortly thereafter. AccountingWEB will announce the winners to the public on June 15, 2009.

Woman’s Society of CPAs (AWSCPA) |
The American Woman's Society of CPAs offers
a national scholarship to individuals aspiring to become a Certified Public
Accountant (CPA). The recipient of the scholarship will receive funding for
a CPA review course conducted by a recognized CPA review provider. The scholarship
will be paid directly to the provider and is valued at approximately $2200.
Requirements:
- Applicant must meet the minimum education requirements to sit for the
CPA exam within one year of scholarship awarding.
- Applicant must either be an entering Senior, 5th year student, graduate
student or a graduate AND eligible to take a review course within one year
of scholarship awarding.
- Applicant must have a 3.0 GPA in accounting and a 3.0 GPA overall.
- Due date of application is March 15. Applicants will be notified of acceptance
on June 30.
- Applicants must provide a validated transcript from their college to
verify grades, major and classes taken.
- Applicant must submit an essay no longer than 1,000 words explaining
why they are deserving of the scholarship.
- Applicant must either be a U.S. citizen or a permanent resident of the
United States .
Needs and scholastic aptitude will be considered for the recipient(s). Awarding
of the scholarship will be done at several student conferences held between
August and December of each year, including but not limited to the Beta Alpha
Psi Annual Conference.

- Various scholarships ranging from $250 up to $3,000 are awarded through CalCPA’s 14 chapters. Some include multi-year endowments. - State scholarships are earmarked for 5th year students committed to following California’s Pathway 2 or the 150-hour education requirement for CPA licensure. Masters scholarships are for those individuals pursuing a Masters of Accountancy or Masters of Taxation program. Scholarships vary but begin at $2,500. Applications must be postmarked no later than September 15, 2009.
- CalCPA’s Doctoral Scholarship program is for individuals pursuing a Ph.D. in accounting. Scholarships will be awarded to three doctoral candidates per year to receive a maximum of up to $10,000 per year with a possible renewal of three years total. The recipients will be required to join the faculty of a four-year college or university located in California for a period of at least three years. Applications must be received no later than April 15, 2009.

Colorado Society of CPAs |
- High school scholarships of $1,000 are awarded each spring to outstanding high school seniors who plan to major in accounting at Colorado community colleges and Colorado colleges and universities with accredited accounting programs. Scholarships are awarded each year in March for the upcoming fall college term.
- Sophomore scholarships of $1,000 are awarded for the spring term to outstanding sophomore accounting students who attend Colorado community colleges and Colorado colleges and universities with accredited accounting programs. Scholarships are awarded each year in December.
- College scholarships of $2,500 are awarded twice a year to upper division accounting majors at Colorado colleges and universities with accredited accounting programs. Both undergraduate and graduate students are eligible. Scholarships are awarded in July for the fall quarter or semester and in December for the winter quarter or spring semester.

Society of Louisiana CPAs Scholarships |
- The Society of Louisiana CPAs offers scholarships in varying amounts every year to accounting students in Louisiana through the LCPA Education Foundation and through the LCPA chapters.
- Up to 20 scholarships ranging from $500 to $2500 are awarded each year. In addition, the Society annually awards four memorial scholarships in honor of Christopher E. "Kit" Smith, CPA, Alex L. Postlethwaite, CPA, Richard J. Roth, Jr, CPA, and C. Will Elliott, CPA, Ph.D. The amounts of these scholarships are between $750 and $2,500.

MSCPA Scholarship Awards
Every year, $3,000 in scholarship money is offered to Maine students who are pursuing careers as CPAs in the form of two separate $1,000 Macdonald Scholarship awards and one $1,000 Paychex Scholarship.
The Education and Scholarship Committee of the MSCPA will select the recipient of each award.
Using the following criteria, the applicant:
- Must be a Maine resident and a full-time junior or senior undergraduate or graduate student attending a Maine college or university who is an accounting major committed to pursuing a career as a CPA.
- Have a cumulative GPA of 3.25 or better on a 4.0 scale.
- Submit the application and supporting documentation by the date stated on the application.

New York State Society of CPAs |
Scholarships are $2500/$1500 for full/part-time students. The FAE Excellence in Accounting Scholarship program will only fund declared accounting with at least 60 credits. Recipients must apply yearly, the scholarship is not renewable. The program is administered by FAE, a 501(c) (3) organization.
An FAE Campus Ambassador at each College or University in New York State will collect all applications. The Campus Ambassador will work with the campus accounting department and the college financial aid office to select 3 deserving candidates based on scholarship and financial need. These candidates will then be forwarded to a statewide selection committee. Each program is guaranteed at least one scholarship. Additional scholarships for each school will depend on the total number of available scholarships.
Scholarship Eligibility Requirements
Applicants must:
- have declared a major in accounting as described below and, if applicable, been accepted to that major;
- be residents of New York State and either U.S. citizens or permanent residents. If you are not a U.S. citizen or do not have a permanent resident visa, you are NOT eligible for a scholarship and should not submit this application;
- be enrolled at or accepted to a New York State college or university that offers an accounting program(s) registered by the N.Y. State Education Department as meeting the educational requirements for admission to the CPA examination (hereafter designated as a “Registered College”);
- have completed a minimum of 60 credit hours by the application date. Part-time students or students whose programs have followed an irregular pattern must be at an equivalent stage. In addition such students must have successfully completed the college’s introductory course(s) in accounting;
- have achieved an overall cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or higher (based on a four-point system) for the above 60+ credit hours;
- have completed and filed a FAFSA application and been approved for financial aid; you are not eligible for the scholarship if you have not applied and been approved for financial aid and should not submit this application;
- have an FAE Campus Ambassador or Department Chair approval

- Beginning in 2009, the Society will offer a newly-redesigned award, of $500. The recipient must be an NDSCPA student member or affiliate, who intends to write the CPA Exam and become a CPA.
